Reservations must be made as group size is limited to 12 participants borrowing equipment and a maximum of 15.

Should you wish to know more about the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway trail, here you go! The entire trail is a total of 12 miles from the Lost Mound Drive/ TN Riverpark continuing to Camp Jordan of Eastridge.  It follows alongside the wooded Chickamauga Creek winding through a mix of landscapes, including parks, commercial areas, and residential neighborhoods of East Chattanooga.

In addition to the boardwalks, a highlight along this section occurs near Sterchi Farm, a City of Chattanooga public park. In this area, you’ll find elevated boardwalks over wetlands with steep inclines along the creek. You’ll also find a canoe and kayak launch here as well as environmental artist Adam Kuby’s installation Clamber-Scramble-Traverse. This nature-based adventure trail encourages kids and families to climb, jump, explore, and play alongside the creek. Further down the trail, another highlight are the wetlands and the trail traversing the Brainerd Levy.  Come ride with us.

We love all of the fun events from Outdoor Chattanooga. Check out their website (link above) and all of the exciting stuff they have going on. They are run by the new Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors Department. It is so wonderful to finally have a designated Parks Department in our great city. Like me, many folks move to Chattanooga for the unique outdoor opportunities found here and it's about time the city recognized this need. They are doing great work building out our area parks, hosting events and saving our natural areas. Check them out!

Chickamauaga Dam Lock Through Kayak Tour with Chattanooga Guided Adventures

When: Sunday, June 9-11, 9:00am-12:00pm
Where: Hubert Fry Center Boatramp, Tennessee Riverwalk, Chattanooga, TN 37406
Cost: $79.00

From the Chattanooga Guided adventure Website:

Try the unique guided experience of locking through Chickamauga Dam from the seat of a kayak. You will paddle into the 120 ft tall lock and the massive gates will close behind you. Your guide will connect the kayaks to a moving anchor via a line on the side of the lock to secure all of the passengers on the trip.

A Tennessee Valley Authority Lockmaster slowly empties the water in the lock from Chickamauga Lake into the Tennessee River below the dam. As the water empties the lock, you slowly descend into the depth of the lock to match the river level below the dam.  The massive doors in front of you open and your guide will lead you into the river where the paddling adventure continues on the Tennessee River with the gentle current helping us downriver.

You will also learn about the history of the dam and how it affected the surrounding communities on this guided tour.  Be sure to check out this trip in 2023 if you want to try locking through the 83 year old lock.   Once the new lock is completed in January of 2024 Tennessee Valley Authority will decommission the current lock. This is a truly unique Chattanooga kayaking experience.
